Overview
After learning how jet engines work, I modeled a high-bypass turbofan in SolidWorks — partly to understand the machine, partly as an excuse to get proficient in new CAD software.
Challenges
The hard part was the rotating machinery: the compressor and turbine stages (LPC, HPC, HPT, LPT) have extremely small fan blades that snapped easily when printed. It took iteration on blade geometry and print settings to get parts that survived assembly.
Result
A working physical model with hundreds of printed parts, and hard-won experience in 3D printing miniature components and managing large SolidWorks assemblies. The animation below shows the full assembly in motion.
